1. Werner Vogels on better note taking

https://www.allthingsdistributed.com/2024/05/hacking-our-way-to-better-team-meetings.html

“I subscribe to the idea that systems should be made as simple as possible, but no simpler.”

2. The Netflix team on building local language support

https://netflixtechblog.medium.com/now-streaming-in-your-language-the-technology-behind-netflixs-global-interface-e0c732c69b16

“Being available in over 190 countries means that many of our members engage with our UI in non-English languages.”

3. Building toward Unified Observability

https://devops.com/building-toward-unified-observability/
DevOps.com

“Observability goes beyond the scope of monitoring and requires a deeper understanding of how different components and systems interact.”

I particularly enjoyed this article off the back of the #Aviatrix Network Insights API release a few weeks ago (shameless plug, I know).

4. GCP Outages…

https://www.theregister.com/2024/05/20/google_cloud_network_outage/?td=rt-3a

“At 15:22 last Friday, US Pacific Time, Google Cloud ran “maintenance automation intended to shutdown an unused network control component in a single location.” Which is fair enough. It worked! Unfortunately, it also worked in other locations – about 40 of them, by The Register‘s count.”

Not to bash on GCP, just reporting the news. Even the mighty sometimes get it wrong.

5. Managing AI Risk

https://techcrunch.com/2024/05/19/uk-opens-office-in-san-francisco-to-tackle-ai-risk/

“The idea is to get closer to the epicenter of AI development. The Bay Area is the home of companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Meta that are building foundational AI technology.”Yes, a token AI article.

Particularly liked the Netflix article about product localization and the impact on their developers syntax. Something you don’t think about with translation services.
